I made it through the month!
Things have been rather slow in the land of Amber-photography but you have to admit that it's okay for me to take some crap pictures.
And in the land of me googling to find myself, I am the first in a search for 366 pictures. Somebody say something!

Not that Google Analytics would give any hint of it, but I am the third listing in a search for 366 Photos! The truth is, there don't appear to be too many of us. That is, outside of Flickr.
I guess the people actually doing this have risen to the top of the list. Some interesting sites:
Julie's 366 Photos in 2008
Steven Cox (though the formatting is not coming out okay at all in Firefox)
It's Too Sunny Out There

I shot this on my way back from a biofuel conference near my office.

Also, Flickr is definitely cutting down on image quality when Blogger resizes my images they become warped and it is painfully obvious in this shot. That pattern on the bricks is completely not present on Flickr or in the original image.

I made Thai chicken soup and forgot all about the Nam Pla (fish sauce) which is absolutely essential to the dish. It came out kinda bland.

Eastern Market on Capitol Hill turns into a flea market every Sunday and it was absolutely jam-packed today, even though it was freezing. I bought a very old film camera that is probably a complete piece of junk (it's pretty badly beat up but was only $4). More in my Picasa.

After 3 days of working hard at the picture-taking business, I wasn't in the mood and so I made it to dinner without anything to show and took this picture which clearly is nothing special except that it's a full second of exposure at f/1.8, which just kinda proves that my camera is cool.

Miami was absolutely gorgeous - blue as blue can be water everywhere and sunsets like this. It was also blissfully 75 or so every day. Learned a lot, sat around quite a bit because I neglected to bring any of my other projects and took some photos. It's good to be back...

Shot in the last "oh crap" 5 minutes before going to bed, this is a toy pirate ship George stole from his parents' house.
You won't see me for a few days because I am journeying to sunny Miami on business but when I get back you'll be treated to lovely beach shots, with any luck.

MLK Day, January 21, 2008

In an attempt to get "landscape" pictures for my photography class (read: whole lot of fail) I went to Roosevelt Island. Landscapes aren't my thing and they never have been, so this is the best from the set.

On the road to Richmond, passed this crazy old building that was totally falling apart. As George patiently waited for me to finish, a guy pulls up in a truck and proceeds to tell him the story of the place. Apparently it was a bar that had no seating so the guys would go there after work and just mill about. The man was rich and didn't need the payoff from the place but kept it around for tax purposes. I caught the end of this story and asked, "what happened to it?" "The guy died," said the man in the truck.

This photo sucks. It's not even remotely in focus but it's more interesting than any of the other shots from today which should clue you in to their general quality. Again, hopefully the weekend (three days of shooting possibilities) will bring good things.

Light is a tricky thing. I don't think I have the hang of it yet.

Wednesday, January 16, 2008 - George's Birthday

You'll forgive me if I can't help but post two today...

This came in the mail for me (and George) today from a very generous friend.

This really gross but endlessly fascinating growth occurred in a supposedly clean petri dish which my boyfriend "sanitized" and put into storage for future use in cultivating yeast strands for his homebrewing adventures.

Ruby slippers. Uninspired today - I'm sick.

Saturday, January 12, 2008

It's a shame, really, to have to waste so many good pictures because I can only count one per day. I take much better pictures on the weekend (seeing as there is sunlight).

January 11, 2008

Blurry near the interesting detail but oh well. Again, hopefully it will get better for the weekend.

January 9, 2008

Guess what? Not every picture is going to be a good one. Deal with it. These are au gratin potatoes made by George's roommates.

January 8, 2008

This was taken on my commute home from work. I left a bit early today to go to my first photography class (it was alright) and caught the sunset. Soon enough, this will be my regular commute lighting and then eventually, the days will be long again.

January 7, 2008

I suspect you'll see a lot of self-portraits this year - as I am the only perpetually willing subject around. I messed with the levels a bit which may or may not be allowed. I like it.

January 6, 2008

I chose this photo because if you look closely enough, you can see my reflection in the back of the ant.

I've been spending a bit of time looking at other peoples' efforts thus far and so with today's photo I post a short list of other people committed to 366 photos in 2008. This is really from a somewhat cursory search of the internet but it will be interesting to go back to this list and see who's still on board later this year:

My stupid roommate: Mark
Project366 at Flickr
Year of Photographs
Ruth's Photo of the Day
366 BW's
WonderDawg
Pen-Pusher

So it's a short list because I'm bored now. In any case, the Flickr group has more than 100 people in it which means a small but recognizable percentage of humanity is totally whacked and has nothing better to do (oh wait til I start photographing my knitting projects - worlds will collide!)

January 5, 2008

I have been meaning to photograph this memorial for some time now. Every time I go up the GW Parkway to get to work, I pass this lovely and fanciful memorial. Of course, I have neglected to showcase what is normally so eye-catching about the thing. I prefer this one which pays attention to the texture and detail of the wave. More photos available in my Picasa.

January 4, 2008

At Johnny Rockets, the burger place, they have these big tall coat hangers next to every booth. It was rather cold outside and this is my cold-weather paraphernalia.

I hope to deliver some more interesting photos for the weekend.

January 3, 2008

Today's lesson: "macro" mode does not function very well in low light. You must stabilize the camera or you will have blurry shots. This is the best from the set but not the most interesting. The most interesting had double vision.
So far this is working remarkably well - except for the fact that it takes me ages to go through all the steps.

January 2, 2008

It was so cold on my way to the library today that I wore two hats.

I debated between this picture and the one of my salad. I always make very beautiful dinners when I eat alone but sadly, no one is there to see them.

New Year's Day, 1am

New Year's Eve was spent at the house of a friend of a friend. My gracious hosts threw a lovely party and George and I had a lovely time. Pictured here are myself and the aforementioned George, waiting for the metro. Two pictures today to start the series off right.
